Course Outline

  • The CRPO Registration Examination is a competency-based, simulation-style computer exam designed to assess entry-to-practice skills for Registered Psychotherapists. It focuses particularly on information gathering, treatment planning, and decision-making in realistic client scenarios.

  • Information Gathering involves identifying and evaluating the information needed to understand a client’s situation and provide appropriate care. The exam assesses how well candidates gather relevant information within the context of each client scenario.

  • Decision Making refers to using the information available about the client and applying professional judgment to determine appropriate actions and care. The exam evaluates decision-making in the context of good client care.

  • The exam uses a computer-based, simulation-style format. It includes 10 simulations, with approximately 5–8 sections per simulation. Response options are weighted according to their appropriateness for good client care.

  • Focus on understanding and applying the competencies rather than simply memorizing information. Practice applying professional judgment to realistic client situations, particularly information gathering and decision-making.

  • There is no single study period that works for everyone. Your preparation time should depend on your familiarity with the competencies, clinical experience, and confidence applying them to realistic scenarios. A structured study plan can help you identify and strengthen areas that need more attention.

  • Memorization alone is not the goal. The examination assesses how candidates apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate competency-based information within realistic scenarios.

  • If you fail, there are additional opportunities to write the examination subject to CRPO's requirements. After two unsuccessful attempts, CRPO requires a learning plan process before a third and final attempt.
